Plagiarism

Please take a moment to read this short notice from the admins of Sketch a Day.

Everybody is receiving this message. Receiving this message doesn't mean you've done anything wrong!

Dear artists of Sketch a Day,

Firstly, thank you for being a part of the Sketch a Day community and helping it grow.

As Sketch a Day has grown, unfortunately there has been an increase in plagiarism in the app.

For those of you who don't know, plagiarism is defined as:

the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own

In other words, if you find an image on the Internet (for example Pinterest, Google Image Search, etc.) and upload it to Sketch a Day, that is plagiarism. I am happy to allow people copying photos or other sources, as a lot of people here are learning, and that is a great way to learn. If you do copy someone else's work, please say that you copied it, and if possible, give a link. I don't think there is any shame in doing that for the purpose of learning.

Sketch a Day is about creativity, community and sharing. Sketch a Day is also supposed to be a positive place where people can try something new each day and post it whether they think it's a success or a failure.

On the whole, this is how Sketch a Day operates. People really enjoy the app and love to see other people's ideas, and receive comments and likes.

Stealing someone else's work and passing it off as your own is runs totally counter to the aims of Sketch a Day. It doesn't help you improve, it spawns negativity, and it is also illegal.

So, firstly, I urge every artist on Sketch a Day to always submit your own work.

Secondly, if you do see any plagiarism, please report it by going to the Comments page, then Report in the top-right corner.

Thank you,
Tom Hicks
